What is Reiki?
“REIKI” is a Japanese word which literally translates as “Universal life force energy”.
REI – Universal life energy
Ki – Personal Energy
REI = represents the Universal Life Force which is brought through personal energy =KI for the purposes of balance and healing.
“A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.” (English Oxford Dictionary)
Reiki healing can be given and received with a hands-off approach and also distant healing. Reiki is a non-invasive complementary therapy which has been taught and used in the UK since the late 1900’s.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki is an energy healing treatment that works on the whole body, mind and spirit. Natural positive healing vibrations are transmitted through the hands of the Reiki Practitioner to the body of the client. Reiki brings about balance and healing to the mind, body and spirit. It encourages and accelerates the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
What happens in a Reiki healing session?
After your case history notes have been taken, I will explain what the session entails so that you are aware of what to expect throughout the session.
Mobile phones are switched off or on silent mode. You remain fully clothed. Most of my clients lie down on my massage couch (on their back) supported with a pillow under their knees and head. A blanket is provided as the body temperature can drop within a few minutes of the treatment starting.
Background music can be played if the client wishes it.
The duration of a Reiki session is between 15 minutes (typically for virtual/distance healing) and 50 minutes (face to face).
Face to Face Reiki Treatment:
I will request permission to place my hands upon the client before starting the treatment.
I (the Reiki practitioner) place my hands either on or just above certain points on your body, usually starting with the head. The wonderful thing about Reiki is, that you can place your hands anywhere on the body and the Reiki energy will eventually travel to where it needs to go, even if the practitioner is not directly working on that part of the body at the time.
Common sensations people experience during a Reiki Treatment:
- Deep relaxation
- Calmness
- Warmth
- Coolness
- Relaxed breathing
- Clearer mind
- Less Stressed
Other sensations which can be experienced during a Reiki treatment:
- Tingling
- Heaviness of body
- Lightness in the body
- An ache in a muscle or joint
- Emotional reaction (tears, joy,)
- Release of stress / heaviness/ weight
- Pain relief
The results of a Reiki treatment cannot be predicted. Reiki Practitioners treat the body, not the problem, person or disease. When the body is in balance, healing can occur. Reiki gently brings the body into balance, helping it to maintain that balance longer with each treatment. Acute conditions tend to respond quickly, whereby chronic conditions often require a series of treatments.
As a practitioner, I do not diagnose or prescribe.
Reiki is given fully clothed in my clinical practices and also virtually upon arrangement. Reiki is a safe treatment for children and adults. Reiki does not replace traditional orthodox medical treatment or medication, but can work alongside it to encourage healing and bring about balance to the mind and body.
